Pharmaceutical Executive Digest Europe - March 4, 2009 - (Page 6) Mind Your Own Bio Business Pharm Exec Europe talks to QED’s enterprise director Martijn Mugge about his Bio-Entrepreneur School aims to mould the next wave of pharma and biotech stars. N ext week (10–12 March), the Nottingham’s (UK) QED BioEntrepreneur School opens its doors to another wave of delegates eager to discover the secrets of commercialising their science. The brainchild of QED Consulting’s Martijn Mugge, the School was established three years ago with BioCity Nottingham, with additional funding from the East Midlands Development Agency, Nottingham City Council and UK Trade and Investment, among others. It offers a three-day, intensive programme to help delegates “explore their entrepreneurial potential” and “develop essential enterprise and innovation skills.” PEE: Can you further outline the Bio-Entrepreneur School’s objectives? MM: The school is run over three days and is aimed at people in university and in laboratories who have an interest in commercialising the science they are working on. We’ve found that there’s a lack of good commercial training around so we thought that this would be a great vehicle to get people past the first step. We don’t expect them to be in a position to commercialise their science in three days of course, but we do expect them to have a better understanding of what the commercialisation of science actually means. We also have delegates who are already in the pharma business. Often, as scientists, they haven’t learnt about enterprise, about business and the more commercial side of things. So we get investors and people from the business community involved, and it’s a great way to practice networking skills. We focus very much on the ‘people’ side of things. We do have a session on the second day about protecting your intellectual property and on business planning and raising finance, but Day Martijn Mugge (left) with Glenn Crocker, CEO of Bio City Nottingham. One and Day Three are mostly about encouraging delegates to think about themselves, to think about their own skills, and to look at what it is that makes entrepreneurs successful in this sector. Then it’s a case of how we can apply those lessons. A lot of it has to do with who you are, with what you know and who you know, the contacts you have. We also look at marketing: how can you get your idea recognised in the market place? And what sort of problem are you actually solving with your science? Very often scientists can get carried away with their science; they often don’t think that someone somewhere has to have the 2 FROM THE EDITOR / NEWS 3 11 PHARMA MBAs NEWS 6 BIO-ENTREPRENEUR SCHOOL 8 SALES FORCE EFFECTIVENESS 10 GSK’S PRICE CUTS 13 CALENDAR 14 ON THE MOVE http://www.bioentrepreneur.co.uk http://www.bioentrepreneur.co.uk http://www.biocity.co.uk http://www.emda.org.uk/ http://www.emda.org.uk/
