Pharmaceutical Executive Digest Europe - March 4, 2009 - (Page 7) Training & Development money to pay for the solution that the science offers. And if that’s not recognised then there’s no business. That’s one of the key things that we try and get across in the three-day course. How did the course come about? We’re a private sector, commercial organisation and we do a lot of work around entrepreneurship and innovation. We’ve run these sorts of schools in other sectors. Three years ago we identified and need and an opportunity to do something in the life sciences sector. I basically got together with BioCity Nottingham, and we sat down, as entrepreneurs do, with a clean sheet of paper and thought about how we could make this happen. We drew up a plan and then we got on the phone and tried to find the funding for it. We hit lucky with Greater Nottingham Partnership and managed to get a threeyear contract. Israel. The good thing about that is that you get a lot of scientists talking about their ideas and they may not have realised that somebody else in another part of the country is working on something very similar, or is perhaps in a position to offer a solution to their problem. Clearly the crisis is hitting everybody. But the School has actually seen an increase in applications over the last three years. That might be because we’ve become more recognised, but it might also be that people are considering other options, and the fact that they need to know more about commercialising their science. Of course, the delegates don’t pay any fees; they only pay for their accommodation and travel, so that’s an added attraction. From a funding point of view, the School is a good investment because there is a lot of latent entrepreneurial talent out there, particularly in universities. It helps people realise that what they’re working on may have commercial potential, so it offers a real opportunity for public funding to help stimulate the economy. The focus at the moment is on the East Midlands and the universities here, but we have actually recruited from across the country, and from outside the UK. We’ve had applications from the US and from pharmexec.com 2 FROM THE EDITOR / NEWS 3 11 PHARMA MBAs NEWS 6 BIO-ENTREPRENEUR SCHOOL 8 SALES FORCE EFFECTIVENESS 10 GSK’S PRICE CUTS 13 CALENDAR 14 ON THE MOVE http://www.pharmexeceurope.com/europharmexec/newsletter/subscribeNewsletter.jsp http://www.bioentrepreNEur.co.uk
