Pharmaceutical Executive Digest Europe - March 18, 2009 - (Page 1) News Merck’s big deal boosts Euro pharma shares AstraZeneca and Shire were among the pharmaceutical stocks to receive a boost in the wake of Merck and Co’s announced $41 billion acquisition of Schering-Plough last week. News of the deals immediately saw AstraZeneca up £0.95 to £22.42 ( 24.44) and Shire up £0.33 to £8.14 ( 8.87). Ironically, the Dow Jones saw Merck shares down 7.7% to $20.99 ( 16.58) on the day of the announcement, while Schering-Plough rose 14.18% to $20.13 ( 15.90). As of last week’s closing price for Merck stock, the Merck deal is valued at $23.61 ( 18.65) a share, which represented a premium of roughly 34% to the average closing price of Schering-Plough shares over the previous 30 days. Turn to page 3. 10 NEWS UK company cuts jobs at French facility Napp Pharmaceuticals (UK) has achieved 11th position in the ‘Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For’ competition. Nearly a thousand companies fought for a place on the three Sunday Times lists: the 20 Best Big Companies, the 100 Best Companies and the 100 Best Small Companies. This is the third year running that Napp has won a place in the top 20.
