Pharmaceutical Executive Digest Europe - March 18, 2009 - (Page 10) News Lilly and BioFocus renew vows BioFocus DPI, the service division of Galapagos (Leiden, The Netherlands), has extended its drug discovery agreement with Eli Lilly until the end of this year. The agreement extension builds on the collaboration — which sees BioFocus identify active compounds by screening Lilly’s library compounds — that began in March 2005. BioFocus has been working with Lilly on discovering new compounds that target specific cellular signal transduction pathways. “We are pleased to extend this collaboration with Lilly into its fourth year,” says Chris Newton, senior VP at BioFocus. “It is satisfying to know that our drug discovery research consistently meets the standards of large pharma companies, such as Lilly, and that we are successful in these long-term collaborative relationships.” For more on these news stories and all the latest breaking pharma news, look at our website www.pharmexeceurope.com Gemzar patent expiry opens up EU for Actavis Actavis (Iceland) has launched its first major oncology product, Gemcitabine, in the European Union. The drug is to be made available on the date of patent expiry of the originator product, Eli Lilly’s Gemzar, in western Europe. Gemcitabine will be launched in eight EU markets this month, including Germany, France and the UK. The product will be launched in the remaining EU markets, as tender cycles permit, later in the year. Gemcitabine has already appeared in several less regulated markets around the world. Lilly’s Gemzar is estimated to have generated around $ 1.5 billion ( 1.18 million) in annual revenue. It is used in the treatment of cancer including lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, bladder cancer and breast cancer. Almac honoured for Northern Ireland investment The Almac Group, headquartered in Craigavon Northern Ireland, has been named ‘Exporter of the Year’ by Northern Ireland’s economic development agency, Invest Northern Ireland. The award recognises outstanding export achievement and growth among local businesses that have been exporting for over four years. Almac’s CEO Alan Armstrong commented: “As a Northern Ireland based company doing business with clients right across the globe, we have always understood the importance of developing existing export markets as well as exploring new export opportunities.” The Almac Group, which UK’s SkyePharma to cut French manufacturing jobs SkyePharma is “considering job cuts” at its manufacturing facility in France in a bid to cut its operating costs by £1.6 million ( 1.74 million) a year. The company has entered into a consultation process with employee representatives at the Lyon-based facility with a view to reducing its workforce of 129 employees by about 30%.”Changes are essential to ensure that we have the correct staffing for the forecast levels of demand,” said Dr Ken Cunningham, SkyePharma’s chief executive. The Lyon facility, built in the early 1990s, is currently being used to produce various oral dosage forms, including Cornerstone Therapeutics’ asthma drug Zyflo CR (zileuton) First Horizon’s antihypertensive Sular (nisoldipine) and Sciele Pharma’s triglyceride-lowering product Triglide (fenofibrate). The company operates one other manufacturing unit in Muttenz, Switzerland.
