Pharmaceutical Executive Digest Europe - March 18, 2009 - (Page 11) News GSK to confront NICE in public The UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), the body that approves drugs for the UK National Health Service, will go head-to-head with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) on the issue of drug pricing at the 2009 BUPA Health Debate later this month. The debate pits Professor Sir Michael Rawlins, chairman of NICE, against Simon Jose, senior vice president of UK pharmaceuticals at GSK, at a time when conflict between the two organisations is escalating over GSK’s breast cancer drug, Tyverb. NICE is refusing to approve Tyverb because it is “not a costeffective use of NHS resources,” despite GSK’s offer to fund the drug for the first 12 weeks of treatment. The debating panel — which also includes Dr Mohga M Kamal-Yanni, senior health and HIV policy adviser, Oxfam, and Professor Thomas Pogge, professor of philosophy and international affairs, Yale University — will give its views on how new drugs and treatments can be priced more cheaply to widen their availability not only in the UK but also in the developing world. They will also discuss how more investment in new treatments for illnesses of the poor and marginalised can be encouraged. The 2009 BUPA Health Debate takes place at 11.30 am on 25 March. The findings reveal that the drugs such as MDMA can enhance the results of exposure therapy — a treatment known to be effective in relieving symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but with a relapse rate of around 40%. Ecstasy is known to increase emotional control and releases hormones essential for emotional learning. Combined with psychotherapy, it is now being tested in clinical trials to help patients with PTSD.
