Pharmaceutical Executive Digest Europe - April 8, 2009 - (Page 1) News UK biotech industry renews calls for urgent government investment Access to capital is the most pressing challenge facing emerging life sciences companies in the UK, a new survey from the BioIndustry Association (BIA) has revealed. Between 12 and 20 March 2009, BIA conducted a survey on the financing of the life sciences industry. Results from 295 companies showed that 78% of respondents found that access to finance had become more challenging over the last 12 months, and 76% of companies seeking to raise equity finance over the last 12 months have experienced some level of difficulty, with 37% of these unable to obtain any finance at all. The most frequently cited reasons among investors for their reluctance to commit finance was either the company or the sector was considered too risky, although the majority of companies surveyed were seeking to raise less than £1m ( 1.08m). Dr Clive Dix, BIA Chairman, said: “The urgency of the problem must not be underestimated.
