In a telling display of burgeoning confidence, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd, a Mumbai-based generics manufacturer, has taken on New Jersey-based Wyeth. Sun has applied to the FDA for approval to sell a drug with the same active ingredient as Wyeth’s Effexor XR, whose active ingredient is patentprotected until June this year. Sun plans to sell its drug an an extended-release tablet, not a capsule. It seems that when Indian companies are not actually waiting to take over their Western counterparts, they are willing to take on Big Pharma in the battle for supremacy.
