Lundbeck A/S (Denmark) has acquired the UK and Ireland rights for nalmefene from Britannia Pharmaceuticals (now part of STADA Group, headquartered in Germany). Following the new agreement Lundbeck has worldwide rights for nalmefene, excluding North America, Mexico, Turkey, and South-Korea. The intention is to seek marketing authorisation for nalmefene in the treatment of alcoholism simultaneously in all 27 EU member states via the centralised procedure. To this end, Lundbeck plans to further strengthen the existing nalmefene registration dossier in its alcoholism indication with additional Phase III clinical studies before submitting the marketing authorisation application. The studies are expected to start this year. Teva (Israel) has been granted MHRA approval to market a generic version of GlaxoSmithKline’s Imigran (sumatriptan). The 50mg and 100mg tablets have been licensed to be sold as prescription only. Dexcel Pharma’s (Israel) generic sumatriptan was granted UK marketing authorisation in May 2006. Vaccinex, Inc (US) has been awarded European Patent No. 1340088 for its antibody discovery technology platform, ActivMab Technology. Vaccinex is using its patented technology to discover and develop new monoclonal antibody therapies, and has advanced four of its lead therapeutic antibodies into preclinical drug development. Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc (US) has reached a settlement with Novartis AG (Switzerland) on outstanding patent litigation related to Watson’s generic version of Exelon (rivastigmine tartrate) capsules. Under the terms of the settlement agreement, Novartis has granted Watson a license to its US patents covering Exelon for a generic version of Exelon. The specific date on which Watson may launch its generic product and other details concerning the settlement have not been disclosed. Watson’s Abbreviated New Drug Application for its generic version of Exelon has received tentative FDA approval. Pfizer’s Celsentri (maraviroc) has been granted Indian Patent Number 204132, becoming the first HIV/AIDS treatment drug to get a patent in India. Maraviroc does not currently have a European patent. ON THE MOVE ClinPhone (UK) has appointed Vincent Renz as chief operating officer (COO). In his role as COO, Vincent, previously executive vice president and chief technology officer with eResearch Technology Inc, will coordinate all of the global operating groups that are responsible for the development, delivery and support of ClinPhone’s clinical trial technology services to customers. Chris Brinsmead, president of AstraZeneca (UK), has been named as the next president of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI). He succeeds current president, Nigel Brooksby (managing director of Sanofi-aventis UK), in April. Mr Brinsmead sits on the ABPI’s Governance Board and has been a member of the its Board of Management since 2002. Lifecycle Pharma AS (Denmark) has appointed Hans Christian Teisen as chief financial officer. Teisen, currently CFO of Bavarian Nordic AS, will replace Lifecycle Pharma’s current CFO Michael Wolff Jensen, who will leave the company in March. Neil McCrae, vice president for UK corporate affairs and EU communications, GSK, is leaving to join AstraZeneca (AZ) as global head of media relations. McCrae, who will be responsible for managing the group press office and building relationships with business and international media in London, will report to vice president for group corporate communications, Caroline Hempstead. Anavex Life Sciences Corp (Switzerland) has appointed Dr Cameron Durrant to its board of directors. Dr Durrant, currently worldwide vice president of Virology Global Strategic Marketing at Johnson & Johnson, holds a MBA from Henley Management College at Oxford and a MB and BCh from the Welsh National School of Medicine. Molecular Profiles (UK) has appointed Dr Rob Whittock as associate director of Materials Characterisation. Based in Nottingham, he will provide technical direction and leadership to the materials characterisation team and support independent experts across the UK, Europe and USA; and clients’ scientific staff, patent attorneys and in-house patent counsel.
