Pharm Exec Europe looks at the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the dynamic life sciences recruitment sector. or years pharma has battled an encroaching talent shortage, regardless of the particular trends that have governed the ebb and flow of its fortunes. The blockbuster boom of the 1990s may have boosted the industry’s fortunes and encased it in a vibrant optimism, but it didn’t make finding experienced staff with the right level of experience and versatility any less difficult. Today, we are leaving Big Pharma’s halcyon days behind and considering a landscape bustling with strong mid-size players and fast-growing generics companies. Consequently, the search for the new division leaders, vice presidents and C-suite executives is as complex and intense as it has ever been. This can cause headaches for pharma, but for the specialist search agencies with their finger on the pulse, it is business as usual. And for the right candidate who knows his worth and is prepared to make changes to his life, it could be a more exciting time than ever. But, to make a vast understatement, things can move slowly in pharma, and companies who have often relied on long-serving employees and staff loyalty may find their culture threatened in the F changing landscape of talent deployment. Martin Reynolds, CEO of the specialist retained search consultancy Sharpstream Life Sciences, comments: “How do you fill the gap when senior executives have migrated? In one organisation, we have 65% of senior executives who could retire in the next five years. How do you replace them and retain the company’s culture?” In the major companies, there is, of course, succession planning in place, but this isn’t really an insurance against the pharma executive’s changing attitudes to work and self-fulfilment. And in smaller companies, the risk is more pronounced. As Nick Stephens, CEO of RSA, comments, smaller companies “require substantially different skill sets. You may have someone whose CV looks wonderful, but it’s unusual if they are able to translate their operating style to a smaller, higher growth environment — an environment where, for example they may have to do their own photocopying or travel booking once in a while — the kind of thing entrepreneurs are used to.” http://careers.sharpstream.com/home.asp http://www.thersagroup.com/
