Sharpstream, Hays and RSA are all committed to that busy and highly competitive market, as well as promoting their activities in the east. “The barriers to entry in the US are very high; it’s a more established market recruitment-wise,” says Adam Marsh. “It’s seen as a couple of years ahead in terms of its technology and the types of services it provides, but of course as a business we have to be out there because that’s where many of the best biopharmas’ global HQs are based.” The smaller UK search agencies could have an edge of quality of their US counterparts when it comes to negotiating their clients’ way through a more cautious pharma market. The demand for talent in commercial has been growing steadily weaker for some time and the upcoming presidential election is bound to have further implications. “The US industry is becoming nervous about what Obama or Hillary may do to pricing,” says Nick Stephens. “Companies are shedding very significant numbers of salespeople, so you need fewer people to manage them, and this cascades all the way to the top.” “A 10% reduction of staff is an indication that something is very wrong in the big US companies,” adds Sharpstream’s Martin Reynolds. Martin believes that, after November’s elections, there will be a refocus on the quality of the science, reimbursement — a change in the healthcare system. It’s clearly a change that he wants to get involved with — the US, he says, will comprise half of his company’s business by 2010. As the political and economic climates change, then, old markets such as the US could soon become more open to new ways of thinking, just as the emerging territories are presenting a brave new world of pharma. For the ambitious, world-class executive, opportunities abound. And what makes an ideal candidate from a search agency perspective? Adam Marsh suggests it is “someone who is well travelled, has experience of different markets, speaks multiple languages, who has spent time particularly in the Asia market, and who has worked on international projects, not just local projects.” If you tick some or all of those boxes, you may be more valuable than you thought. Nick’s company has thus seen huge demand from its Singapore office to bring people who have industry experience to Asia Pac. “In manufacturing it’s less of a problem; if you get the process right it works,” he says. “But in clinical development there are so many places for it to fall down.” Nick goes on: “There is some very strong scientific talent coming out of the newer markets; if you’re looking for a CSO for a biotech company, then you might find one of those people from Eastern Europe or Asia Pac.
