The report will have serious implications for Sanofi’s planned resubmission of the drug to the FDA in 2009 as a diabetes treatment option. Last year the FDA rejected Acomplia, saying it raised the risk of depression and suicidal thoughts among users. MHRA found one case of suicide and two additional attempts among the drug’s users. Overall, there have been five deaths — one by suicide, two with fatal heart attacks, one sudden death and one by infectious disease — among patients taking Acomplia. The drug, which generated sales of $122.8 million last year, remains available abroad, but now has stronger warnings on its labels. Novartis set to buy Protez Novartis is to acquire Protez Pharmaceuticals, a company founded by BTG plc and Protez board members Chris Cashman, Dr Klaus Esser and Dr Luigi Xerri, to focus on the discovery and development of novel antibiotics. Novartis is purchasing the entire share capital for an initial payment of $100 million, with a further $300 million possible depending on the success of PZ-601, a broad-spectrum antibiotic being developed for potentially fatal drug-resistant infections such as MRSA. BTG will receive $5 million upon closing of the transaction and could receive a further $15 million if PZ-601 achieves certain milestones. Commenting on the deal, Lousie Makin, BTG CEO, remarked: “We are delighted with the progress made by Protez and are confident that as part of Novartis its programmes will play a major role in the field of infectious diseases. It is also pleasing to see this investment deliver such a good return to BTG.” ON THE MOVE SkyePharma chief executive Frank Cordello is stepping down after the company completes its financial restructuring this year, the Financial Times reports.
