Pharmaceutical Executive Europe - September 2008 - (Page 11) Brussels Report Commission in accelerating medicines development — the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI). Its new claim is that it is “supporting the promotion of IMI towards smaller biotech firms at European level” — and its president Dr Incerti has been appointed as one of the five industry representatives to the IMI governing board. EBE is now claiming to be “the voice of both larger biopharmaceutical corporations and small and medium-sized biotechnology companies operating in Europe.” EBE is also making great play of its efforts “to help shape sound policymaking,” through raising awareness of the biopharmaceutical industry: “Our target audiences include government decision-makers, the media, patient organisations, the academic community and other opinion leaders,” it proclaims. And it adds to its menu of opportunities with business development support services to member companies, ranging from training and networking to bilateral exchanges “initiated with a number of national biotechnology and biopharmaceutical industry associations around Europe,” and “a new business-driven initiative to improve the competitiveness of the European biotechnology sector” with the European Venture Capital and Private Equity Association. EuropaBio still claims seniority. With its wider brief, extending beyond pharmaceuticals and into industrial and agricultural biotechnology, it styles itself the representative of 81 corporate members operating worldwide, five associate members including six bioregions and 25 national biotechnology associations — through which, it says, it is “also the voice of over 1800 small and medium-sized enterprises.” But its new secretary general, who takes over this summer, faces a tough battle to assert himself and his association in the face not only of his political adversaries among regulatory authorities and consumer associations, but also of a rival trade association hungry to snatch his members away. ■ Don’t wait until your company hears about Celsis Rapid Detection micro testing as the reason why the competition has suddenly gotten leaner and is outperforming you.
