Nycomed shows strong second quarter results The first six months of 2008 saw Nycomed’s adjusted EBITDA increase by 4.9% to €653.7 million, compared to €623.3 million in the first six months of 2007, the company has reported. Most of Nycomed’s markets and key products have performed well for the first half year of 2008 and provided a counterweight to the decreasing sales of Pantoprazole in the US. Total net turnover decreased by 3.4% to €1714.5 million compared to €1774.0 million in the first six months of 2007 primarily due to the negative effect of “at-risk” launches of generic Pantoprazole in the US and positively impacted by the execution payment from the outlicensing agreement with Sepracor. Adjusting for these effects and the loss of the imaging business from Bracco, the company reports that total net turnover in the first half year increased by 3.1% compared to the same period in 2007. Second year at the top for search consultancy Euromedica, an international healthcare executive search consultancy, has achieved top position in the healthcare and life science sector in the Executive Grapevine annual market share analysis. The company’s market share increased by 16% over the last year, it is reported. This is the second consecutive year that Euromedica has made the number one position in the Executive Grapevine survey. Novo takes up torch for women Novo Nordisk has joined the Danish government’s global ‘Call to Action’ to accelerate progress on gender equality. At a ceremony in a Copenhagen last month, the Danish Minister for Development Co-operation Ulla Tørnæs (below, right) handed over a torch to Novo’s executive vice president Lise Kingo. The torch represents a Call to Action to leaders around the world to help accelerate progress on the Millennium Development Goal 3 (MDG3): to empower women and promote gender equality. As torch bearer, Novo Nordisk is committed to creating awareness of how diabetes impedes women’s development and empowerment. This will be supported by actions to effectively overcome this barrier by improved prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Women currently have a higher diabetes-related morbidity and mortality due to biological, cultural and socioeconomic factors. “We simply need to change diabetes for women,” Lise Kingo commented. 7 Calendar Upcoming conferences and exhibitions. 10 Brussels Report Competition between the bioindustry associations. 12 Strategy Fundamentals Applying VRIO competencies in your business. 14 BioFutures Gerhard Symons’s second report on pharma in Russia. http://www.pharmexeceurope.com
