In contrast to the UK code, which prohibits giving ‘items for the personal benefit of health professionals’ (Clause 18.2, p. 29 Supplementary Information, 2008), the Russian code is more obliging.1 Presents and souvenirs unrelated to medical activity can be given to health care professionals on no less than four occasions a year: birthdays, New Year’s Day, International Women’s Day (March 8), and Day of the Medical Worker (date unknown). Bona fide promotional aids in the UK cannot exceed £6 — but personal gifts to the value of £10 can be given in Russia. Giving ~700000 doctors2 in Russia gifts costing £40 per year would cost £28m — surely pocket change for the average Muscovite billionaire, in spite of the credit crunch? the proliferation of corruption in the healthcare system. Despite unbridled corruption in the system, the healthcare workers with whom I spent time were unquestionably dedicated to their practice, to their profession, and above all, to their patients. The incongruous extremes found in Russia have been oft commented upon; however, few authors have captured the contradictory essence of life in Russia as well as Gorkii, who wrote in his autobiography that “[l]ife is always surprising us — not by its rich, seething layer of bestial refuse — but by the bright, healthy and creative human powers of goodness that are for ever forcing their way up through it.” Innovative solutions.
