Turkey: the new frontier In the wake of serious economic growth, healthcare reforms and large-scale industry investment, Turkish pharmaceuticals is charting its own destiny. Investment conditions looked dire, mired by a period of political and economic turbulence and the Republic’s history of systemic volatility. But a set of sweeping reforms has turned Turkey into one of the world’s most dynamic economies. A flagship of that recovery has been the pharmaceutical industry, with about 300 entities selling a yearly total of 1.3 billion units. In the past 6 years, Turkish pharma has grown in value from $3.7 billion to approximately $9 billion, bolstered by a steadily growing economy, a young workforce, increased healthcare expenditures and a cadre of companies delivering drugs to a market of more than 70 million people. As a so-called ‘pharmerging’ market, the country A could surpass sales of $11 billion by 2010, putting it potentially among the world’s top 10. Turkish pharma also stands to benefit from a growing national population, larger consumer spending on drugs and improvements in health awareness. Just as critical will be a surge in foreign investments, brought by economic consistency and recent healthcare reforms that have improved public access to medicine and created a medical system that is closely aligned to the standards of EU nations. “As the Turkish market has become considerably more stable, a lot more predictable and with better transparency, the international purchasers can begin to understand the benefits of doing business here,” says Zinta Krumins, managing director, Boehringer Ingelheim in 2 OCTOBER 2008 PHARMACEUTICAL EXECUTIVE EUROPE
