Sticking to what you know may be the safe option, but the pharma sector needs ambition to remain dynamic. Morpheus o you really look forward to arriving at work in the morning? Is your current job exactly where you wanted to be in life? Do you find your superiors inspiring and your colleagues wonderfully supportive? For most of us, the answer to these questions is probably a resounding no! According to random googling, a number of websites estimate that the average person spends approximately 2960 days at work in a lifetime. Given the gruelling deadlines and last minute hitches that characterize work in the pharmaceutical industry, this figure probably vastly underestimates the time impact on our lives. If we drill down into these calculations and split time into the amounts spent in meetings, useless training courses or commuting, we would probably become even more horribly depressed. Ideally, we should all have had a vague career path in mind and worked towards some sort of goal after D our years of studying. Deep down, we knew there was little chance of becoming the astronaut, actor, international rock star or footballer we dreamt of when we were 4 years old, but we must have at least hoped we would be happy. The truth is most of us have drifted around and moved into places we did not expect to end up in. By the time we realize that we are dissatisfied in our careers, we are stuck because we need to pay our bills, support our families and we are scared that any career change will leave us on the streets. Then there’s the strange situation where we meet people at parties who think our career is exciting. This makes us question our recurring feelings of disillusionment. It could be worse There are far worse places to be in than the pharmaceutical industry. Overall, it is a dynamic 8 MARCH 2008 PHARMACEUTICAL TECHNOLOGIST
