Pharmaceutical companies are operating in an increasingly connected world where the key to success is to balance this emerging business model with traditional management discipline. Simon Friend from PricewaterhouseCoopers. he PricewaterhouseCoopers 11th Annual Global CEO Survey, Compete & Collaborate,1 examines the impact of an increasingly connected world on the way companies work, grow, deal with risk and, ultimately, achieve business success. How do pharmaceutical and life sciences (PLS) company CEOs view and address these challenges, and how do their opinions compare and contrast with CEOs across other industries? Globally, PLS is one of the world’s most important sectors and a key contributor to the global economy. In research conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers for the report Pharma 2020: The Vision — Which Path Will You Take?,1 the firm estimates that the global market for pharmaceutical products (excluding medical devices) will more than double in sales by 2020 to reach $1.3 trillion (€832 billion). While the T G7 countries (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US) will continue to be the primary markets driving PLS growth, the E7 countries (Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia and Turkey) are steadily becoming more prosperous. GDP is expected to triple during the next 13 years, and by 2020 the E7 are expected to account for approximately one fifth of global pharmaceutical sales — a 60% increase since 2004. Underlying this growth are demographic, epidemiological and economic shifts that will transform the market. As the population ages, the demand for effective treatments rises, new areas of medical need emerge and the disease burden of the developing world increasingly resembles that of the developed world; for example, many developing countries are seeing a significant rise in hypertension and diabetes as their economies 10 MAY 2008 PHARMACEUTICAL TECHNOLOGIST
