Dave Scott from Tepnel. ince the beginning of the 21st century, the size of the outsourced drug development market has grown and estimates place its value at more than $57 billion (€36 billion). During 2002–2006, there was an estimated annual growth rate in pharmaceutical R&D expenditure of 3.5% in Europe and 7.7% in the US. As the outsourcing market has expanded, the top tier global CROs have grown through an ever increasing number of strategic and opportunistic acquisitions and mergers (M&As). These mergers have broadened the range of the companies’ available services as they attempt to S take the ‘one-stop-shop’ philosophy to the next level: trying to be all things to all customers, with changes in strategy that broaden the risk sharing and collaborative potential between the outsource provider and the client. With the onward march of the global CRO, their acquisitive nature and their ever increasing portfolio of available services, is there room for the small- and medium-sized enterprise (SME) in the outsource marketplace?
