Pharmaceutical Technologist - May 2008 - (Page 25) SMEs versus CROs SME can assess the gaps in the marketplace and provide high-quality, high-value niche services. The large CROs cannot meet the needs of everyone, nor effectively provide the value elements that elevate the project from being a commodity. If an SME CRO can find its niche and deliver the four differentiators listed, then it will become attractive to the wider pharmaceutical industry and potentially fund itself as a service provider to the larger CROs. The abilities of full service CROs to meet the needs of pharma, biopharma and biotechnology is becoming stretched. As these gaps in the market appear, the opportunity for the SME increases, and by striving to meet with and sustain the differentiators of quality, customer care, flexibility/adaptability and scientific excellence, make it a very good time to be an SME.
