Morpheus ave you ever worked for one of those pharmaceutical companies that claim to be the ‘best’ and refuses to admit any imperfections? Induction days at these companies are particularly strange affairs as they feature lectures from senior managers and other assorted individuals that openly preach how wonderful the organization is. Typical lectures will run over the glorious track record of the company until you are mind-numbingly bored into complying with their mantra. You might even be weighed down with company material to further implant these positive messages into your brain. Sometimes I think they should play that Simply The Best Tina Turner song and get all the employees jumping in the aisles. After all, if you’re going to be blatant, you might as well go the whole way. H Common sense Fortunately, whenever I’ve come out of these events (and the compulsory follow-up sessions) I’ve had the sense to remember that if these companies were so wonderful then no one would ever leave them in the first place. What puzzles me even more is how people working there are willing to believe such blatant propaganda. Many of us have studied for years, critically analysed detailed scientific texts, papers and journals, contemplated a range of theories and then been examined on them, and yet as soon as we set foot in these companies we are persuaded to ditch our ability to think for ourselves and accept the view from on high. Personally, I find it insulting to be told by resident departmental deadwood that we are the best in the industry without any independent evidence to prove such a bold claim. No one will even define what being the ‘best’ means or how you judge it. After all, how can any one pharmaceutical company be the best in the industry for every conceivable parameter? To further complicate the situation, if you talk to people from different companies (usually the bigger ones) they all claim to be the best. How can they all be right? The best? A simple glance at the top ten pharmaceutical companies in 1997 and 2007 listed by revenues shows there has been considerable movement in 8 MAY 2008 PHARMACEUTICAL TECHNOLOGIST
