Pharmaceutical Technologist - July 2008 - (Page 10) Market watch The future of drug delivery Compliance and efficacy issues have warranted a growing need for novel drug delivery devices. Once a small market, the drug delivery sector is now poised for tremendous growth and holds enormous opportunities for existing players and new entrants. Sylvia Miriyam Findlay from Frost & Sullivan. T he global drug delivery market is forecast to gain significant importance during the coming years. Though the drug delivery market is dominated by oral forms of drugs, other methods, particularly noninvasive forms such as pulmonary or transdermal, are growing rapidly. Though advancements are constantly changing the market dynamics in the injectables segment, preference for noninvasive modes of drug delivery has been the major driving force for pulmonary and transdermal systems. Figure 1 shows the global market share of the various drug delivery systems in 2007. Pulmonary Until recently, pulmonary drug delivery was confined to the treatment of respiratory diseases such as asthma/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. However, the market for pulmonary drug delivery remains dynamic with new and emerging opportunities in other therapeutic areas such as infectious diseases and vaccines. The market landscape is bound to witness dramatic changes with patent expiry driving generic competition, a changing regulatory climate and direct-to-consumer marketing creating renewed interest and opening new opportunities. Advancements in dry powder inhalation have pushed the inhalation market to a new level. Various factors have contributed to this rapid growth, particularly escalating research activities, innovations in particle engineering and the development of novel device architectures. Large markets for diabetes, pain, infectious diseases, women’s health and oncology enhance the scope and breadth of application of novel noninvasive drug delivery systems. Transdermal Transdermal drug delivery has been used to deliver hormones for endocrine disorders. The therapeutic application of transdermal drug delivery includes 10 July 2008 PHARMACEUTICAL TECHNOLOGIST Gregor Schuster/Getty Images
