Pharmaceutical Technologist - September/October 2008 - (Page 15) Market Watch In response to evidence that some of the certified manufacturers have not consistently adhered to GMPs in the past, there is ongoing effort in the country to increase inspections of already certified sites. With increasing commitment to international standards, Asian CMOs are securing more outsourcing orders from large companies. The commitment to Western standards is also being reflected in the modernization of plants, and moves to innovate through the development of technologies, such as PAT, have been necessary to ensure facilities are ready to meet future manufacturing needs. Conclusion China and India will continue to spearhead growth in the Asian pharmaceutical sector but, alongside them, Singapore will maintain its position as a centre for research and innovation. While the trio of India, China and Singapore are proving the ‘hotspots’ of the region, other countries, notably Korea and Taiwan, are also becoming increasingly significant. Companies need to readjust their horizons and make the most of the opportunities presented in Asian countries. The pharmaceutical business model is moving away from a fully integrated company structure to a future where companies use a wide range of outsourcing, partnership initiatives, as well as other contractual and relationship arrangements, to create networks of collaboration and discovery. Companies that will be most successful are those that are most adept at managing and mixing a range of contractual relationships and partnerships across a number of different locations. There will be no ‘one size fits all’ approach. Companies need to make the most of the strengths of different locations and opportunities for different parts of the value chain.
