Robust growth The five main European markets (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK) grew by just a little more than 4% in 2006, reflecting the third year of slowing performance. By contrast, many of the Eastern European countries achieved double-digit growth, as did Latin American markets where sales increased by 12.7%. China’s performance was down on 2005 in the wake of a government anticorruption campaign on physician promotion, but the market nevertheless expanded by 12.3%. In Japan, the impact of biennial price decreases contributed to an overall market decline of 0.4% — a sharp downturn after a strong performance in 2005. One of the fastest growing markets in 2006 was India, where pharmaceutical sales increased by 17.6%. “Last year, India transitioned from a ‘developing’ market to an emerging one, with many multinational pharmaceutical companies tapping into the huge potential it offers,” observes Ray Hill, general manager, global consulting at IMS. “Several factors, including the acceptance of intellectual property rights, a robust economy and the country’s burgeoning healthcare needs, contributed to this accelerated growth.” 2005 levels, and up 35% from the end of 2003.
