The Column - June 2008 - (Page 12) News The Column www.thecolumn.eu.com June 2008 GPC/SEC training course PSS Polymer Standards Service will offer a two-day GPC/SEC training course on 9–10 October in the Novotel Hotel, Mainz, Germany. The training course will provide theory lectures and practical sessions for modern analysis of macromolecules using gel permeation chromatography (GPC), also known as size exclusion chromatography (SEC). It will cover the theoretical background of the separation technique and will include practical advice for reproducible and accurate analysis while also demonstrating the application advantages and limitations of GPC/SEC and GPC/SEC hyphenated with light scattering, viscometry and other techniques. In addition to the lectures and practical sessions, there will be praxis sessions in which small workgroups (with a maximum of 5 people) will verify a GPC/SEC system, check the performance of the separation column and calibrate and evaluate samples using different techniques. Each group will have its own tutor, an experienced polymer chemist, to discuss special applications and field questions. It is expected that each attendee should be able to obtain results from analysis data, qualify the condition of the analytical system and the separation columns as well as optimize the application conditions and the workflow in the laboratory after their successful participation in the course. Registration should be completed using the company’s registration form, which should then be faxed back to them at +49 6131 96239 11. A participation fee is required of €980 19% VAT, which includes lecture and practical sessions, course material, coffee break and lunch as well as dinner on Thursday evening. Accommodation is available at the venue, Novotel Hotel Mainz, at a rate of €130 19% VAT when booked through the company. For more detailed information, including a programme for the course, please visit the company’s website at www.polymer.de A decade of training This year Crawford Scientific celebrates its 10th year of delivering training solutions in the UK. After a decade, the company reports helping over 3000 UK-based analytical scientists, with, it is claimed, over 90% of course delegates rating their experience as “excellent”. To say thank you to all of its clients the company has planned a “Sizzling Summer” programme. This programme includes a 10% discount on list price for all on-site and practical courses (all of the HPLC, GC, LC–MS, GC–MS, method development, validation and basic laboratory skills courses). Detailed information on course content lists for both on-site and practical courses is available via the company’s website. In addition to this, the company is offering a one-year free subscription to its electronic analytical reference library (EARL) e-learning support for all on-site delegates. EARL allows users the ability to view more than 3000 multimedia pages on over 50 topics within analytical chemistry with access to the “Ask the Expert” function and on-line assessments and tutorials free.
