The use of the Electronic Nose allowed a significant number of samples to be screened on an industrial level with only the disputed batches having to be submitted for human testing. By reducing the number of samples to be evaluated by the sensory panel, the analyser enabled savings in both time and cost. Electronic Noses, which require minimal sample preparation, can objectively and quickly characterize global odour profiles of raw materials and finished products. They provide efficient solutions for food industries, packaging producers and users to ensure quality and safety of products while saving time and cost. Their applications in quality control but also in R&D and marketing departments are numerous. These include validation of the quality of raw materials and final products, comparison and control of suppliers, manufacturing processes monitoring, sensory-directed development of new products, competitors’ benchmarking and customers’ claims treatment. Marion Bonnefille is communication manager within Alpha MOS. After obtaining an engineering degree in chemistry she worked in an R&D laboratory developing chemical and natural raw materials for fragrances. Then she completed a management degree and worked in marketing; first in a pharmaceutical company before joining Alpha MOS.
