Houseboating Adventures - Issue 18 - (Page 62) G Gulf of Mexico. The GULF OF MEXICO is south and west of Florida. It is the ninth largest body of water in the world. It is an ocean basin largely surrounded by the North American continent and the island of Cuba. It is bounded on the northeast, north and northwest by the Gulf Coast of the United States, on the southwest and south by Mexico, and on the southeast by Cuba. The shape of its basin is roughly oval and approximately 810 nautical miles (1,500 km) wide and filled with sedimentary rocks and debris. It is part of the Atlantic Ocean through the Florida Straits between the U.S. and Cuba, and with the Caribbean Sea (with which it forms the American Mediterranean Sea) via the Yucatan Channel between Mexico and Cuba. H Holly Bluff & Hurricanes. manatees go into Silver Glen Springs. Silver Glen is more know for its excellent blue crabbing. Be sure to say hello to Judy Armstrong the owner/manager of Holly Bluff, as she knows this part of the river just about better than anyone. Florida has more HURRICANES, thunder, and lightening than any other state in the country. Central Florida has the highest incidences of lightning strikes than anywhere in the world. The Gulf of Mexico’s warm water temperature can feed powerful Atlantic hurricanes causing extensive human death and other destruction as happened with Hurricane Katrina in 2005. In the Atlantic, a hurricane will draw up cool water from the depths and making it less likely that further hurricanes will follow in its wake (warm water being one of the preconditions necessary for their formation). However, the Gulf is shallower and its entire water column is warm. When a hurricane passes over although the water temperature may drop it soon rebounds and becomes capable of supporting another tropical storm. June 1 through November 30 is hurricane season in Florida. The St Johns River has a very wild side and that’s where you will find HOLLY BLUFF MARINA, at Deland, Florida. Here, the St. Johns is the river of old, primitive Florida with its beautiful fresh water springs and narrow, wild river tributaries. Owls, alligators, manatee, and birds of all kinds can be seen everywhere. The most popular place to visit is a place called Silver Glen Springs. It’s about 4 hours north, and it’s a crystal clear spring that you can take the boat back in and stay there for a few days. You can anchor back in the spring, where the water is 72 degrees year round. Closer to the marina, Blue Springs is very nice, but you can’t take the boat into that spring. You have to beach it out front and walk up to the spring. Blue Springs is known for the manatee, while very few )6B@" A05("%C&5AB9&@
