Houseboating Adventures - Issue 18 - (Page 66) O Owls & Ocean. Florida has many OWLS, including the Screech Owl, Barred Owl, Burrowing Owl, Horned Owl, and Barn Owl. Owls are valuable to Florida as they help keep the vermin and rodents in check. Owls can see very well at night, but they can also see during the day. They have a special inner eyelid which blocks bright sunlight - owl sunglasses! Most birds have eyes on their sides of their head. This helps them to see sideways and backwards. Owls, however, have both eyes in the front. This gives them good depth perception (helps them to tell how far away something is). Unfortunately, it means they can’t see sideways or backwards. To deal with this, owls can turn their head almost all the way around. But they can’t spin their head in a full circle; their head would twist off! Owl ears are just holes on the sides of their head covered with feathers. These holes are higher on one side than the other. This helps the owl tell if a sound is coming from above or below. The Atlantic OCEAN borders the east coast of Florida and you probably won’t have the opportunity to houseboat there, unless you are making the Great Loop in your own boat. Coral reefs on the Atlantic coastline are the only natural reefs off the continental United States, and Agatized Coral is the state stone. A coral reef on Pulley Ridge is the deepest coral reef off the shores of the country. P Q Parks. Florida has a variety of PARKS including 3 National National Parks, 110 State Parks, and several theme and amusement parks. The Everglades National Park is a chain of lakes, rivers and marshlands that spreads over much of south Florida. It is the largest subtropical wilderness in the country. The southern most place in the continental United States is at the very tip of the park, and Florida panthers, the State Animal and an endangered species, live here. Quiet. Shush! If you love houseboating then you’ll love the wide variety of QUIET locations that you’ll find from our six different houseboating companies servicing this big state. Probably the most quiet will be your trip down the Suwannee and St Johns rivers where you’ll see more wildlife than other boaters. )6B@" A05("%C&5AB9&@
