Cold Form Metal Framing Catalog - (Page 37) FRAMING X-BRACED SHEAR WALL Shear walls are required on buildings in order to provide overall stability to the structure. One of the most common types of shear walls used on cold formed steel structures is the X-Braced Shear Wall. This system utilizes tension strapping in an X-configuration along with tie-in posts and holddown anchors. Gusset plates are also commonly used to attach tension straps to post. When the structure is subjected to wind or seismic loads, the tension straps pull tight and the load is transferred to the foundation. For multi-story construction, the tension and hold down loads can be extremely high. In cases like this, welded connections are often required. • Capable of handling large lateral loads. • All-steel system using readily available materials. • Can be used with any type of wall sheathing or finish.
