Here are seven easy ways to help save the environment — and save you money. Green Your Home Your home is where you use the most energy and water and create the most waste. Changing certain habits can have a huge impact on the environment. For example, using compact fluorescent light bulbs, Energy Star-rated appliances, highefficiency showerheads and well-sealed windows can dramatically reduce your emissions. Cut your energy use further by raising your thermostat in the summer and lowering it in the winter when you are away from home. Also, keep your head out of the refrigerator and the door closed! The refrigerator is the single biggest energy-consuming kitchen appliance, and opening the refrigerator door accounts for between $30 and $60 of a typical family’s electricity bill each year. 6 FALL 07
