At first glance, they might appear to be very disparate industries, but as AGA’s new president and CEO, Dave McCurdy, notes, all three focus strongly on energy and the environment and safety issues. So it’s not surprising that McCurdy’s career path has now led him to head the advocacy organization for America’s fuel—abundant, domestic, clean-burning natural gas. Most recently McCurdy served as president and CEO of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, where he led the industry in building a new, collaborative approach to the development of federal policies. Formerly, he led the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) for eight years as president and CEO. McCurdy also has served seven terms (from 1981–1995) in the U.S. House of Representatives, as an assistant attorney general of Oklahoma and as an attorney in private practice. Throughout his career, McCurdy, a recognized leader on technology policy and national E security, has striven for excellence and thus garnered numerous honors. In his new role, McCurdy sees new ways to achieve. “[At AGA,] I see the opportunity to achieve a viable—a sustainable—domestic energy and environmental policy,” he says. In an exclusive interview with Bruce Kauffmann, editorial director of American Gas, McCurdy shares his vision for the association and how he plans to move the industry forward. AMERICAN GAS: You have an impressive back- ground in both the association business and federal advocacy, but was there something you proposed or outlined during your interviews with the AGA selection committee that you think particularly resonated with them—a business philosophy, a strategic vision, a problem-solving approach, that kind of thing?
