Many of these stations are located at existing
Pilot-Flying J truck stops. Pilot is the nation’s
largest truck stop operator, with more than 550

stations near long-haul trucking routes and major
warehouse distribution centers in North America.
“LNG-fueled trucks can now travel the
country and reap the benefits of fuel cost savings,
reduced dependence on foreign oil, and the lower
emissions profile that characterizes this abundant
American resource,” says Andrew Littlefair, president and CEO of Clean Energy.
The rollout of LNG fueling stations coincides with the arrival of new heavy-duty trucks
powered by natural gas. This spring, Cummins
Westport will debut its ISX12 G 12-liter LNG
engine, with full production and delivery by the
fall. Volvo Trucks plans to launch its first 13-liter
LNG engine for North America next year. Other
major truck producers, including Kenworth, Peterbilt, Navistar, and Freightliner, also have LNG
models in development.
New LNG activity isn’t limited to America’s
roads. In December, General Dynamics NASSCO finalized a contract with TOTE Inc. for
the design and construction of two 3,100 TEU
(20-foot equivalent unit) LNG-powered containerships. When completed, the 764-long containerships are expected to be the largest ships of any
type in the world powered primarily by LNG.
Construction of the first containership is
scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2014, with
delivery by the fourth quarter of 2015. The second
ship will be delivered in the first quarter of 2016.
“This project breaks new ground in green
ship technology,” said Fred Harris, president of
General Dynamics NASSCO, in a news release.
Designed by DSEC, a subsidiary of Daewoo
Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in South
Korea, the new containerships will feature Daewoo’s patented LNG fuel-gas system and a MAN
ME-GI dual-fuel, slow-speed engine. Both ships
will be constructed at the NASSCO shipyard in
San Diego.
On the LNG supply side, Sempra Energy
has reached another milestone in its quest to add
natural gas liquefaction and export facilities to its
existing Cameron LNG terminal in Hackberry,
La., with the filing of a permit application with
the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
requesting approval to begin construction. The
project progressed smoothly through the FERC
pre-filing process initiated in April 2012.
Sempra expects construction to begin in the
fourth quarter of this year. Additional permits
and approvals will be required before construc-
