Through a wide range of communications tools, AGA leads a fact-based dialogue on natural gas By Dave McCurdy president’s Message Continuing the Conversation T hroughout the world, natural gas is playing an increasing role in the conversation about energy. America’s natural gas utilities are a strong voice in that conversation—delivering our product safely and reliably, and advocating for the opportunity to deliver the promises of natural gas for generations to come. You can find AGA members and staff speaking on behalf of this clean energy source everywhere, from community meetings to global conferences, and increasingly we are hosting conversations about the role of natural gas in the future of our nation and our world. We are always looking for ways to enhance our efforts to lead a factbased dialogue and help educate the public about the benefits of natural gas through a variety of communications tools. Our best-practices discussions and in-depth research provide the industry with valuable insight on emerging issues. We are using social media, including our new Twitter handle @AGA_naturalgas, to help reach a broader audience and shape the conversation about energy. The 2013 Playbook, the third edition of our essential handbook for natural gas information, sits on the desks of every thought leader and policymaker in the energy space. This issue of American Gas marks a new era for the publication. We have redesigned the magazine to reflect the growing role natural gas utilities are playing in the conversation about the future of energy. We will expand our coverage of timely news items while continuing to provide the expert analysis that has made American Gas a must-read publication in the utility industry and beyond. Our refreshed content will include coverage of the business of gas—how everything from commodity markets to regulations affects the bottom line. We will also include updates about AGA’s advocacy efforts on behalf of our members. As always, we will profile emerging voices within our industry and seek their perspective on the present and future of energy delivery. 2 American Gas february 2013 A conversation about energy is a discussion about the future of our nation, and the pages of American Gas will be a venue for that conversation. Our industry has always been at the forefront of innovation. Advancements in extraction technology have led to an abundance of natural gas in this country, and America’s natural gas utilities are advocating for the deployment of cutting-edge technologies in homes and businesses to efficiently utilize this clean energy source. This issue of American Gas includes a profile of Philip B. Jones, president of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) and a commissioner with the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission. America’s natural gas utilities are proud of our work with regulators at the national and local levels to increase safe and reliable access to the benefits of natural gas. Jones brings an incredible array of experiences to his role leading NARUC, including work in Europe and Asia, and has even spent time working on Capitol Hill. He is an ideal voice for NARUC in this global conversation about how we best use our natural resources to enhance our economy and improve our environment. Natural gas is a bright spot in our economy, and the natural gas industry is a shining example of how constructive dialogue can help us achieve our national goals.
