new plant: Supplanting coal, creating jobs
Michigan-based Consumers Energy says it
will begin construction on a $750 million,
700-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant in
2015. The project will create 600 construction
jobs in the economically struggling community
of Thetford Township, near Flint, Mich. The
plant will employ about 30 people once it opens
in 2017, the company says, and will generate
enough energy to serve about 445,000 customers. The announcement comes a year after Con-
sumers decided to scrap plans for a new $2.3
billion coal-fired plant in a nearby community,
citing increasing restrictions on coal emissions.
In announcing the project, Consumers President and CEO John Russell said a 2008 state
law that created a comprehensive energy policy
for Michigan provided utilities the regulatory
and financial certainty they need to make such
large investments.
