China’s ENN Group, led by billionaire energy tycoon Wang Yusuo, is partnering with Salt Lake City’s Blu to launch a nationwide network of LNG and LCNG fueling stations. (LCNG stations offer both LNG and CNG.) The joint venture company, called Transfuels, has five fueling stations up and running with five more stations set to open in May. Initial markets include Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Georgia, and Washington State. By the end of this year, the company aims to open a total of 50 stations, and long-range plans call for a network of 500 stations operating coast to coast. “We are focused on serving the heavy-duty truck market as well as the marine, mining, and other industrial markets,” Merritt Norton, Blu’s CEO, told American Gas. “With prices that are $1 to $1.50 less than diesel at our pumps [per equivalent gallon], LNG and LCNG offer compelling savings to the trucking industry and other high-volume users.” In addition, switching from diesel to natural gas reduces the carbon footprint of a typical trucking fleet by 25 percent, Norton said. To build awareness of LNG’s advantages, Blu has a group of LNG test trucks available that offer transportation companies a firsthand opportunity to measure results and savings. In February, Vancouver-based natural gas engine maker Westport Innovations announced a global agreement with ENN Group to facilitate cooperation between Westport’s OEM partners and ENN, including Blu. After an initial test period, Blu assists customers in buying new trucks equipped to run on LNG through arrangements with Westport’s original equipment manufacturers. The Blu team also works with fleets to equip certain existing truck models with LNG conversion kits that allow the vehicles to run on 50 percent diesel and 50 percent LNG.
