charlotte, n.c.-based Piedmont
natural Gas has set a goal of reducing its carbon footprint 5
percent by 2017, according to
its latest sustainability report. The
utility plans to achieve that goal
by converting more vehicles to
natural gas and reducing electricity usage in its facilities. Piedmont
natural Gas had 126 natural gas
vehicles in its fleet by the end of
2012 and will grow that number
to at least 300 by the end of
2014, it said. The company also
has introduced a green purchasing program to reduce waste.
A recent U.s. Department of
Defense study found that natural
gas-powered electric generators would be a secure
alternative in the event of an
electric power outage at domestic
military facilities. The study found

out incurring high costs, resulting in fewer spikes
and dips caused by the mismatch between wind
generation and demand.
The study also noted that blending lower-cost
gas generation with the higher initial costs of new
renewables would lower the total rate impact on
consumers for new power coming online.

More Watts, Less Waste
Power generation is up. GHGs are down.
Guess why
t
he rise of natural gas for power generation
has cut greenhouse gas emissions, according
to a new report from environmental consultant M.J. Bradley & Associates.
The review of generation and emissions by
the top 100 U.S. power producers shows the
industry cut emissions of carbon dioxide, nitric
oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide in
2011, even as generation increased.
In fact, power-plant NOx and SO2 emissions
were at least 70 percent lower in 2011 than in
1990. Power-plant CO2 emissions grew by 20
percent overall since 1990 but shrank 7 percent
between 2008 and 2011.
Natural gas is a major force driving those
trends, according to the report. Between 2000 and
2011, gas-fired generation leapt 69 percent, while
coal fell 12 percent. Renewables grew 44 percent.
Coal accounted for 44 percent of power
produced by the companies in the study, followed
by gas, at 23 percent, and nuclear, at 22 percent.
Hydroelectric and other renewables made up 12
percent.
Among the 100 largest producers, coal
plants were responsible for 81 percent of
CO2 emissions, while gas facilities contributed
18 percent. The 100 companies accounted for 86
percent of electricity produced in the U.S.
“The rise of natural gas is a game-changer
for U.S. power-plant emissions, as this year’s
analysis shows,” said Chuck Barlow, vice president of environmental strategy and policy for
Entergy, one of the report’s sponsors.
The report explored emissions-reduction strategies by some of the largest producers. NextEra
Energy added 20,000 MW of gas, wind, and solar
capacity between 2000 and 2011, nearly doubling
