U.S. Census Bureau. New Single-Family Starts (in thousands of units) Builder confidence in the market for newly built single-family homes hit a milestone in June, surging to a reading of 52 on the latest National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI). Any reading higher than 50 indicates that more builders view sales conditions as good than poor. The June score marked the first time the HMI has been above 50 since April 2006; the 8-point jump was the biggest one-month gain since 2002. While single-family housing starts held at a virtually unchanged pace of 599,000 units in May versus the previous month on a year-to-year basis, each month this year has far outpaced 2012.
