thanks to global investments: "LNG for MariNe use is No LoNGer soMethiNG to Look at as a possibiLity dowN the road. it's probabLe aNd it's happeNiNG." it's happening, as evidenced by the many investments being made throughout the world." Until now, ferries, tugboats, cruise ships, and cargo vessels mostly have been powered by high-sulfur diesel and marine oil. But starting in August 2012, the North American Emissions Control Area placed new restrictions on sulfur emissions within 200 miles of the U.S. and Canadian coasts. New International Marine Organization regulations on engine emissions slated for 2016 are tightening requirements to further reduce vessels' nitrogen oxide emissions. While some marine operators may choose to meet the new requirements by switching to a more expensive ultra-low-sulfur diesel for fuel, or installing new equipment to mitigate emissions, LNG is often found to be a more efficient and economic alternative. According to Glandt, studies show that the use of LNG instead of diesel engines can reduce a ship's CO2 emissions by almost 25 percent, lower NOx up to 85 percent, and virtually eliminate sulfur or particulate emissions with reductions of almost 99 percent. Fuel savings are attractive-depending on the location served and quantity used, LNG costs can run 40 to 50 percent lower than diesel on an energy equivalent basis. "The opportunity for LNG in transportation is huge," says Glandt. "Some predict that there will more than 1,000 vessels using LNG worldwide as a marine fuel by 2020. North America will be expanding at an accelerated rate, now that early adopters have committed and their vessels are nearing the operational phase." u november 2013 AmericAn GAs 27
