news The Gas utility Workers Training Program graduated 21 members from its inaugural class. vets trAined for nAtUrAl gAs Utility JoBs the first clAss of 21 militAry veterans has earned its Gas Utility Workers Advanced certifications under a training program run by Peoples Gas, City Colleges of Chicago, and the Utility Workers Union of America. The Gas Utility Workers Program, which has the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity as a funding partner, is designed to develop highly skilled workers with practical experience for entry into the Illinois natural gas industry. The program is administered by the utility workers union’s Power 4 America Training Trust Fund and is affiliated with the Utility Workers Military Assistance Program (UMAP), which helps vets transform occupational skills acquired in the military into gainful career opportunities in the natural gas sector. “The public-private partnership that UMAP has developed is critical to the future of America’s communities and our veterans and military families,” said Richard Passarelli, UMAP chairman. “The skills learned while deployed in the military at taxpayers’ expense will be enhanced by the UMAP program. The support of this program will bring a return on investment to the taxpayers and to our veterans and military families. It will allow those who have honorably served the opportunity to sustain a lifelong career with benefits.” Sixty-seven students are enrolled in the Chicago program. After finishing their classroom training, they will begin a one-month, temporary paid internship with Peoples Gas. The training facilities at Dawson Technical Institute—part of the City Colleges of Chicago system—were recently renovated with support from Peoples Gas, the program’s instructors, and local companies, including Corrigan Co. and Reeder Heating. One training lab features 56 natural gas meters that use compressed air to simulate natural gas. It is designed to help students understand how to work both inside and outside confined spaces.
