weather This Winter Will be Closer to normal, say long-range forecasters while the nAtionAl weAther Service’s Climate Prediction Center is predicing normal to above-normal winter temperatures and normal precipitation for much of the nation, the private AccuWeather forecasting service offers a somewhat colder and snowier outlook, at least for the midAtlantic region. The Weather Service said that for December 2012 through February 2013, temperatures will be above normal in much of the western U.S. and northern Alaska and near normal elsewhere, including along the Pacific coast. The only exception is South Florida, which is expected to be colder than normal. Below-normal precipitation can be expected in the Pacific Northwest and in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and northern Missouri, the Weather Service said. Above-normal precipitation is likely along the Gulf Coast and in southern Georgia and northern Florida. The rest of the continental U.S. and Alaska will have nearnormal precipitation, the Weather Service said. AccuWeather emphasized its prediction of above-normal snowfall for the Northeast, mid-Atlantic, and central and southern Appalachia, spanning western Massachusetts to southern portions of Georgia and Alabama. “I-95 this year in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic will have more snow than they did last year,” said AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Forecaster Paul Pastelok. “However, as far as abovenormal snowfall goes, [the area] from New York City on south and west has a better shot, with more mixed-rainand-snow systems in New England.” Pastelok said Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, and Charlotte are among the cities that may receive more snow than usual, much of it from big storms that will arrive during the middle to later part of the season. A wet winter is likely for portions of the Gulf Coast and Southeast, Pastelok said, while parts of the Midwest could fall short of normal snowfall again new york city had snow in november and is likely to get more snow than usual this year. beach volleyball games in South Florida may lack for players, with temperatures expected to dip. this year. “Across the Upper Midwest, cities like Chicago and Minneapolis are going to miss out on the big systems down in the South as far as snowfall goes,” Pastelok said. “I think they are going to have to rely on more clipper systems coming down out of the north and west.” In the Northwest, dry conditions are likely to persist, Pastelok said. “I have big concerns about the Northwest as far as drought goes,” he said. AccuWeather said the lower-thannormal snowfall in the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest will result in spotty snow cover, keeping temperatures milder than normal. Temperatures in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic may start out slightly above to near normal, but as the season progresses and some snow accumulates, it will turn colder than normal during February, the forecast said. Rain may hold temperatures below normal in the Southeast and Gulf regions, AccuWeather said, and cold air may threaten citrus crops in Florida at times. www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/ long_range/seasonal.php?lead=2 www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/winterforecast-snow-northeast-nyc/80787 anton oparin / shutterstock.com Get vital first-of-the-month gas market prices for more than 40 pipeline locations and key market centers in Platts Gas Market Report.
