For more information, contact Kathryn Clay, AGF's executive director at kclay@aga.org or 202-824-7122. s tarting later this year, small cities and towns across America can take part in the first-ever nationwide competition- the Georgetown University Energy Prize-to improve the energy efficiency of their residential sectors. The prize, which will be awarded in late 2016, is $5 million. The winning community will be able to invest the award money in additional energy-efficiency improvements. But the benefits for communities-as well as their local governments and utilities-go well beyond the prize money. Throughout the competition, participating communities will have access to resources that will help them develop and implement their plans, including financial and technical assistance, case studies, and customizable tips. The communities will be able to join with other city managers and community leaders in Washington, D.C., to share ideas and best practices. In addition, they'll have the opportunity to meet with experts from various government agencies. Writing to the AGA leadership in early February, AGA President Dave McCurdy urged utilities to get involved in the project. "This is an incredible opportunity to highlight your company and the energy efficiency gains that are possible with natural gas, " he wrote. Working with participating communities, utilities "can discover best practices...to create and implement inventive plans for sustained energy efficiency. Further, greater participation increases our ability to educate the public about energy efficiency issues, including the environmental benefits of the full fuel-cycle of natural gas." Communities with a population between 5,000 and 250,000 are eligible to participate. This would include many cities and towns that are part of greater metropolitan areas.
