The $38 million center features a 90-footlong video wall with banks of monitors and smart boards that allow PG&E engineers, field personnel, and system operators to quickly analyze, share, and assess what is happening with the utility's natural gas system in real time. The 24-hour, seven-day-a-week operation is staffed by employees who monitor 6,750 miles of transmission pipeline and 42,000 miles of distribution pipeline. The center is equipped with a simulation facility with tools where operators can practice dealing with emergencies and hone crisis prediction and response skills. The center "will ensure that our customers receive the reliable service they expect," said PG&E Chairman Tony Earley in a statement. The facility brings together 1,600 of PG&E's gas system employees from four cities and multiple buildings in one centralized location, combining distribution, transmission, dispatch, and reliability planning. About 150 people staff the center at any one time.
