in 2013, the U.s. energy information Administration reported.
There were strong gains in saltbased storage in the traditional
production region (the Gulf
coast states as well as new
mexico, Kansas, Oklahoma,
and Arkansas) as well as in nonsalt storage fields in the West.
in contrast, the east saw almost
no growth in storage capacity.
eiA found 2 percent increases in
both demonstrated and physical
storage capacity. However, there
were significant regional disparities. Working gas, which is the
volume of stored gas available
for use, is roughly balanced 5050 between the east and the two
other regions combined.
continued support for this vital program, the
newly formed National Energy and Utility Affordability Coalition held its inaugural
LIHEAP Action Day fly-in on Capitol Hill
on March 26. Hosted by AGA and the Edison
Electric Institute, nearly 150 advocates from
throughout the United States gathered at AGA
headquarters in Washington, D.C., before
setting out for a day of congressional meetings.
These meetings concluded with an evening reception co-sponsored by AGA and EEI, where
NEAUC awarded Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)
with its "Extra Mile" award, recognizing her
longstanding commitment to LIHEAP. Even
when LIHEAP was fully funded at $5.1 billion in fiscal year 2009, the amount was only
enough to assist one in five eligible Americans.
Since then, funding has been cut drastically to
less than $3.4 billion for the current fiscal year,
and just $2.8 billion in the FY2015 White
House budget request. -Christina Nyquist

Whither Profits?
For gas distributors, revenues have
been down but profits up. Will the
trend continue?
n
atural gas distribution in the United
States saw falling revenues but rising profits during the past five years,
according to a new report by research firm IBISWorld. Looking to the next five years, revenues
are set for an upswing. Will profits follow?
IBISWorld defines the distribution sector as
including companies that manage systems that
distribute gas to end users; marketers that buy
gas from the wellhead and sell it to distribution
companies; and brokers that arrange for gas to
be sold through distribution systems.
