california Lowest of Low Carbon Fuels Company markets renewable NGV fuel and plans to make NGVs more affordable neWporT beacH, ca -Clean Energy Fuels Corp. announced that it has become the first company to commercially distribute a renewable NGV fuel made from waste streams generated by landfills, large dairies, and sewage plants. Called Redeem, the fuel is available at the 35 public Clean Energy stations throughout California and is also being marketed directly to fleets around the country. Thousands of cars, taxis, shuttles, and industrial fleets in California are now using Redeem, which is 90 percent cleaner than diesel and 100 percent renewable, according to the Newport Beach, Calif.-based company, which bills itself as North America's largest provider of natural gas for transportation. "Our goal is to produce and distribute 15 million gallons of Redeem in our first year, which can make significant progress toward achieving California climate change goals and prove that this is a viable, cleaner, and abundant alternative fuel source for our future," said Andrew Littlefair, president and CEO of Clean Energy, in a statement. Clean Energy is investing heavily in a natural gas infrastructure. It has opened about 400 CNG and LNG fueling stations across the nation, serving a broad customer base in the refuse, transit, trucking, shuttle, taxi, airport, and municipal fleet markets. It now has about 70 stations in its America's Natural Gas Highway-a network of LNG truck fueling stations connecting major freight corridors nationwide-with 30 to 50 more sites due to be completed by the end of 2013. Clean Energy's Redeem fuel is derived from biogenic methane or biogas-methane that is naturally generated by the decomposition of organic waste in landfills and other waste streams. Clean Energy captures and purifies this gas, and then sends it into the Interstate natural gas pipeline for use by its customers. Clean Energy produces Redeem at biomethane production facilities in Dallas and Canton, Mich. The company is constructing a third facility in Milling- ton, Tenn., with plans to develop more production facilities across the country. Clean Energy also sources biomethane from third parties. "Redeem is the lowest carbon footprint fuel commercially available and the only affordable renewable fuel for heavy duty trucks," said Harrison Clay, president of Clean Energy Renewable Fuels, a Clean Energy subsidiary. "We believe this creates an environmental and economic incentive for companies inside and outside California who are looking to make a major reduction in the greenhouse gas emissions from their fleet operations while still saving on their fuel bill." Going forward, Clean Energy expects that a new deal it has struck with GE Capital will make it easier for companies to finance purchases and leases of NGV trucks, which run $40,000 to $80,000 more than their diesel counterparts. Under terms of the agreement, if truck fleet operators line up natural gas fueling contracts with Clean Energy, the company will help offset the monthly cost of acquiring new NGVs to make it consistent with the cost of a diesel truck. -G.J. State says too few residents are selecting an alternate gas supplier HarriSburG, pa -The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission has launched an investigation into what its members called the "dismal" participation rate in its natural gas choice program. Less than 13 percent of natural gas customers in Pennsylvania purchase gas from a supplier other than their natural gas distribution company. On the electric side, more than 37 percent buy from a competitive supplier. Commissioner Pamela Witmer told American Gas that the investigation is aimed at finding out if there's anything the state can do to increase competition, perhaps by making it easier for natural gas suppliers to enter the Pennsylvania market or making consumers more aware that they have a choice of supplier. Interested parties have until Dec. 12 to submit answers to eight questions issued by the PUC regarding the state of competition in the natural december 2013/january 2014 AmericAn GAs 17
