GRC Journal - (Page 46) Security & Privacy THREATS LURKING ON MESSAGING PLATFORMS JAHAN MOREH, Chief Security Architect for Sigaba, and JAY CHAUDHRY, Chief Strategy Officer for Secure Computing, address the overabundance of threats on enterprise messaging platforms. As treats constantly evolve and become more and more sophisticated today, organizations are challenged with maintaining a secure environment. In this exclusive head-to-head interview, these two industry experts give organizations advice on how to successfully deploy a security platform and stay protected from all of the dangers. What types of threats evoke the need for specialized security measures as more and more niche players become apparent in a highly-competitive marketplace? JM: Organizations are increasingly opening their corporate information systems to external users. This strategy brings with it new and unforeseen threats as well as challenges in applying security policies to emerging enterprise serviceoriented architectures (SOA). A new class of emerging threats is based on web services and associated applications. Even though the security standards around web services are well established, implementation of these standards is still considered specialized security. JC: As enterprises invest ever-increasing time and resources into ensuring network availability and performance, the opportunity for catastrophic failures due to security holes becomes more and more prevalent. Over time, internet use has changed dramatically, and correspondingly, new threats such as spam, phishing, data leaks, and malware have emerged. Internet-enabled applications and corporate intranets are now mission-critical business processes. Most companies now have fundamental and critical business infrastructure operating both inside their corporate network and exported to customers and partners over the internet. This includes inbound access for remote employees, partners, and customers, as well as employees reaching beyond the edge of the internal network to communicate with customers and partners to conduct business. Because of this, enterprise gateway security has become critical – a necessity for any company doing business. Will an up-and-coming threat such as phishing become the most egregious burden and come to shift the attention of corporate America, or will spam’s reign as the king of fiscal impositions continue to dominate the concerns of the manufacturers? JM: In the last 12 to 18 months, we have come to witness creative and workable solutions to phishing.
