GRC Journal - (Page 93) THE IMPERATIVE FOR IT COMPLIANCE Governance, Risk & Compliance compliance-related expenses, and at the same time improve IT processes. But because most are only just beginning to embrace the full ramifications of governance, they’ll need to seek out a trusted partner, such as HP, that can work on their stated objectives and help integrate IT compliance with the core organization. “The ability to continuously monitor the control environment for compliance and risk issues is extremely compelling for customers,” Ames says. “It’s very important to lowering the audit burden and associated costs,” and he says that it also helps build trust between external auditors and the corporations they’re servicing. The bigger picture While enterprise customers were initially in reaction mode to SarbOx and other information-intensive regulations, they’re now looking beyond the fine print. “They’re starting to embrace the bigger picture around improving IT governance, and understanding how IT risk is impacting their business,” says Ames, “either because they’re trying to proactively address multiple regulations at the same time, or because they see the over-arching benefits of process improvement.” Further down the road, SarbOx and other global legislations may face a backlash from business leaders and organizations, such as PCAOB. “The ebb and flow of U.S. and global political tides could change the face of compliance*,” IDC suggests. Even if such stringent legislation does prove relatively short-lived, building a sustainable strategy around corporate governance makes good business sense. Its focus on key indicators fits well with the focus on a risk-based approach to an effective controlled program. HP’s approach is in line with the compliance recommendations that Deloitte Consulting makes to our clients.” - Lee Dittmar, Principal, Deloitte Consulting LLP 20 BTQ Business Trends Quarterly Q3 2006 | www.btquarterly.com http://www.hp.com/go/governance http://btquarterly.com
