Catalog of Programs 2006-2008, Volume 2 - (Page 112) 2007-2008 SCHOLARSHIPS The following scholarships are sponsored annually by The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. A scholarship is defined as a competition or merit-based grant with both application and terms of award specified by the scholarship provider. Unless otherwise specified, all scholarship awards are evenly distributed quarterly over a student’s term of enrollment. In order to remain eligible for scholarships awarded, a student must be officially enrolled a minimum of 3 out of 4 quarters in each calendar year. Any exceptions to this policy are at the discretion of the Associate Dean, and are only granted for medical or other major extenuating circumstances. Students should contact their admissions representative for current eligibility requirements and availability of scholarships. SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE The Art Institutes Best Teen Chef Competition The Art Institutes sponsors a national scholarship competition annually for high school seniors interested in pursuing a culinary degree at the participating Art Institute of the candidate’s choice. Best Teen Chef is a three-part competition, which begins each February with a preliminary entry submission. In March, a local cook-off is held at each participating location, including The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. One winner from each local competition will travel, all-expenses paid, to the national cook-off, held in May at a destination that is determined on an annual basis. To be eligible to enter The Best Teen Chef competition each participant must be a graduating high school senior with a 2.0 minimum cumulative grade point average. Each candidate must submit a formal application to The Art Institute of his or her choice by the established preliminary deadline. National tuition scholarships will be awarded in addition to local prizes except when a winner receives a full tuition scholarship. All tuition scholarships are awarded toward a culinary associate’s degree, diploma or certificate program. Ther tuition scholarship awards received may be used as a partial credit toward a culinary bachelor’s degree program, should one be offered at the winner’s represented school and the applicant meets admission requirements into the program. Should a winner choose to exercise this option, the credit toward a bachelor’s degree program will equal the tuition scholarship amount awarded toward the culinary associate’s or certificate program at the school. Apply to: Call Admissions at 1.800.275.2470 Terms/Conditions: To enter, the student must submit an entry form, high school transcripts, write a paragraph on why they would like to be a culinary professional including who inspires 112 them and why, and prepare a notebook including a menu with descriptions for a two-course meal including an appetizer, soup or salad, a main course with a sauce, garnish, vegetable and starch. Range of Award: $1,500.00 (1st place local competition); $1,000 (2nd place local competition); $ 500.00 (3rd place local competition); Scholarships will be awarded to the top nine finalists at the national competition ranging in value based on performance. The Art Institutes and Americans for the Arts Poster Design Competition The Art Institutes sponsors a national scholarship competition annually for high school seniors interested in design. The Poster Competition is a three-part process including a preliminary entry submission. If selected, participant will advance to the local competition, held at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh in March of each year. One first-place winner will be selected to advance to the national competition in May (no travel is involved). National tuition scholarships will be awarded in addition to local tuition scholarships. All tuition scholarships must be used at the location the student represents in the competition. Tuition scholarships are non-transferable. Apply to: Call Admissions at 1.800.275.2470 Terms/Conditions: Students competing at the regional level must submit an entry form and poster design that cannot exceed 11” x 17”, and must be submitted in jpg format (with a minimum 300 dpi resolution). The poster must incorporate the current year’s slogan and include The Art Institutes and Americans for the Arts logos. Entries must be appropriate for promotional/marketing purposes. Entries deemed vulgar and offensive will be disqualified. Entries must be original and not copied from other published sources, including books or magazines. No copyrighted, animated or team-created work will be accepted. Original artwork or submissions will not be returned. A current high school transcript must be included with submission. Range of Award: 1st place ( $3,000); 2nd place ( $ 2,000) at the local competition; and 1st place ($ 25,000); 2nd place ( $ 20,000); 3rd place ( $15,000); 4th place ( $10,000); 5th place ( $ 8,000); 6th place ($ 6,000); 7th place ( $5,000); 8th place ( $ 4,000); 9th place ( $3,000); 10th place ( $ 2,000); 11th place ($1,000); and 12th place ($500) at the national competition. The Art Institutes Passion for Fashion Competition The Art Institutes Passion for Fashion Competition offers high school students interested in Fashion Design or Fashion Marketing, Merchandising or Retail Management an opportunity to win a full tuition scholarship to study at one of The Art Institutes. Deadline for entry into the competition is in November. The competition is open to high school seniors, and consists of two categories, Fashion Design and Fashion Marketing, Merchandising and Retail Management. The grand prize in each category includes a full tuition scholarship to The Art Institutes school with a Fashion program at which the student entered the competition. In addition to a full tuition scholarship, each grand prize winning student receives an all-expensepaid trip to New York City for Fashion Week and a “meet and greet” at Seventeen magazine’s offices.
