The Library subscribes to 15 electronic databases which provide students and faculty with a wealth of information in the form of journal and newspaper articles, image sources and business & career information needed to prepare reports, manage projects, communicate with professionals in their fields and satisfy the requirements of the curriculum. These databases are available on campus as well as from remote locations with secured log-ins and passwords. In addition students have free remote access to a large variety of other electronic resources through the local public library, the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. ACADEMIC POLICIES Academic Grade Descriptions Advanced Course Credit (K, TR or P): Course credit transferred from another accredited postsecondary institution is assigned a “K’’ code. Proficiency credit awarded on the basis of exam or portfolio examination is assigned a “P’’ code. Such credit is applied to the total credits required for graduation but has no letter point value and is not computed in grade point average. All advanced course credit must be applied for and approved BEFORE the first week of the initial quarter of study with grade transcripts and course descriptions from the college previously attended. Withdrawal (W): A student who withdraws from a course or from the program during the first nine weeks of the full quarter session or In the first four weeks of an online or mid-quarter start session will be assigned a “W’’ code for each course. The “W” code is not used in the computation of the student’s grade point average. Withdrawal Failing (WF): A student who withdraws from a class after Week 9 from the residential quarter or after Week 4 from the online session. The WF grade counts as an F in the computation of the grade point average. Incomplete (I): Students may apply to their instructor for an “I” or Incomplete grade. “I” grades will revert to an “F” grade at the end of the Drop/Add period of the following quarter if not completed. Repeating Courses: Every course for which a student received an “W’’ or “F’’ grade/code must be repeated and completed with a passing grade prior to his/her final quarter of study in order to graduate. A student who successfully appeals a termination decision must repeat courses for which a “F” or “W” grade/code was received. The original grade/code and the subsequent passing grade(s) will remain on the record for reference purposes. However, when a course is 117 FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT The Art Institute of Pittsburgh occupies approximately 177,000 square feet in The Art Institute of Pittsburgh building, 420 Boulevard of the Allies, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15219. In addition to classrooms, studios, laboratories, offices, student lounges, a library and an exhibition gallery, The Art Institute maintains an art supply store for the convenience of the students, and 10,000 square feet dedicated to Culinary, including 3 fully-equipped kitchens. Class sizes generally adhere to the following: + 25 students per lab + 30 students per studio + 40 students per lecture. The year-round average class size for The Art Institute of Pittsburgh is 20 students. In maintaining this average student/teacher ratio, occasionally the Art Institute will teach a larger class. Equipment provided at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh is specific to the program of study, which includes computers, workstations, printers, software, and photo, video, and audio equipment. The Art Institute is not responsible for loss or damage of student property, including artwork or photography. TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS FOR ONLINE STUDENTS Computer As a general guideline students should not have computer specifications less than a Pentium III CPU, Windows 2000 or XP, and 512 MB RAM or MAC G4 or G5 processor, Mac OS X, and 512 MB RAM. Actual hardware requirements are dependant on the software titles and versions required for class. The requirements for running the software vary and are subject to change. Internet Connection 56K or faster Internet connection is required for online courses, however broadband is strongly encouraged. It is an integral support to the curriculum and plays a vital role within the Institute. As such the Library is committed to responding to the diverse and highly specialized technical and creative educational career programs offered by the school. The mission of the Library is to provide the resources and services necessary to meet the needs of the students, faculty and staff of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and to enrich all areas of the educational pursuits. The Library’s mission is based upon a philosophy endorsing the principles expressed in the American Library Association Bill of Rights and the American Library Association Freedom to Read Statement: to provide an environment that encourages the free exchange of ideas and access to a broad range of viewpoints and expressions. The Library is at the heart of the curriculum process and is an important academic resource for both faculty and students. It houses program-related books, in addition to a considerable variety of career-related periodicals, image resources, videos, DVDs as well as royalty-free sound effects and music. A full-time professional library staff is available to assist students with research and equipment. Equipment available for student use in the library includes copy machines, a scanner, and DVD/VCR players. Binding and lamination services are also offered at a reasonable cost to students. There are currently 24 computer workstations with Internet access, word processing, electronic databases and access to the online catalog. The Library has an extensive and in-depth collection of over 31,000 reference and circulating books, journals and audio-visual resources supporting each academic program.
