This is the fundamental concept of graphic design, and it’s the basis of some of today’s most dynamic fields - advertising, publishing, television and communications. The Graphic Design program at The Art Institute is the first step toward a career in commercial graphics. Initially, students develop an understanding of color and composition, design and typography, and drawing board skills. As they progress through the program, students are trained in creative problem solving and learn to offer solutions that are effective in the business world. Emphasis is placed on learning the skills and techniques of computer graphics, electronic imaging, and production. Tools include scanners, digital cameras, and computer-based hardware and software. Advanced training includes the execution of assignments encountered by professionals in the field. By graduation, associate’s degree Graphic Design students have acquired the training and the portfolio necessary to be prepared to seek entry-level positions in advertising agencies, design studios, publishing houses, corporate communications departments, and television studios as print buyers, gallery assistants, sign makers, photo retouchers, set designers, and production artists. Bachelor’s degree graduates can pursue entry-level opportunities such as production artists, graphic designers, assistant designers, assistant art directors, production coordinators, and computer artists. After gaining professional experience, graduates may be able to go on to seek advanced positions such as art director, creative director, studio manager, or production manager. Some will establish design firms and take on challenging freelance assignments. All courses in the Graphic Design programs are also available online. The Mission of the Graphic Design Bachelor and Associate of Science degree programs is to prepare graduates with relevant industry and professional development skills required for positions and careers in visual communications. Dedicated faculty train students to develop their creative problem solving skills and critical thinking abilities. Graduates are fully prepared to work and advance their careers and to meet the challenges of the continually changing marketplace and Graphic Design profession.
