It encompasses such fascinating endeavors as the design of products and toys, as well as automotive, museum exhibit, and environmental design. Industrial Design professionals solve dimensional design problems, define and develop new products, design prototypes, build models, and create full-scale environments. Students of the Industrial Design program require manual dexterity, artistic interest, technical drawing skill, craftsmanship, self-discipline, and conceptual vision. The Industrial Design program at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh begins with the fundamentals of drawing, designing, and building. The science of ergonomics is emphasized in design to ensure that people and objects interact most effectively and safely. Students participate in the full evolution of projects, from conception and design to fabrication and presentation. Students also learn to use computers to develop concepts, make design decisions, detail design, and construct presentation models. Upon graduation, a graduate of the Industrial Design Associate of Science degree program is prepared to seek entry-level positions such model maker and product fabricator. Graduates of the Bachelor of Science program are prepared to seek entry-level positions including industrial designer, exhibit designer, automotive designer and product designer. The Mission of the Industrial Design Bachelor of Science degree program offers students an educational environment that fosters creativity, innovation and critical thinking. These qualities define form and function of products and systems, balancing the needs of the user with the capabilities of industry. Industrial Design graduates benefit society through their design skills, technical knowledge and aesthetic sensibilities. The program prepares students for career opportunities in a versatile and dynamic profession, providing the tools to compete in a global economy. Students of the Industrial Design Associate of Science degree program require skills related to solving dimensional design problems, defining and developing new products, designing prototypes, building models, and creating full-scale environments.
