Airbrush Technique Issue 12 - (Page 12) On occasion an artist is asked to give a feeling in their artwork rather than a certain subject matter. That is exactly what happened when artist Harrydidit was approached to “bring a little happiness” into the busy life of a client. She’s a business owner and the mother of four small children and it’s hard for her to take the time to capture the feeling of happiness. The project begins with a five foot diameter pedestal table that would sit in the center of the family’s dining room. The table was a find, after a seven year search for just the right one. However it had been whitewashed which was not what the customer wanted. She set out to have it striped to reveal the wood grain in it’s original starburst pattern. Unfortunately, not realizing the pattern was a veneer the person assigned to sand the table went through the veneer. Replacing the veneer was not something the customer wanted to do. Trying to find an easy solution without losing her investment so far, she decided paint was a good idea, something bright, something happy. She took the task to someone she knew could give her want she wanted, airbrush artist Harrydidit. To convey the idea to the customer Harrydidit made a mock up on fabric. This life size drawing allowed him to not only present the effect to the customer but also determine placement without having to touch the base coat. Changes at this point would be very easy and take very little time. The tabletop was going to be the first part of the project; the pedestal would be done once the top was completed. The feeling is what Harry was going for so the subject matter was still to be determined. The top came to Harry with a neutral base of gray primer. All sorts of ideas were considered, a large colorful flower, a bird’s eye view of a bird bath, a pond in the shape of a shell, and finally the shell filed with a tropical scene, “Happiness in a Shell”. Once the idea had been approved Harrydidit airbrushed the outline in white on the gray base. Then in anticipation of his source of light and other highlighted areas he added more white, “sometimes it’s easier to use white that you put there to begin with than to bring it back later, you can always cover it up with color if you need to but depending on what you are working with it’s not always that easy to bring the white or ‘light’ back.”
